What is hay fever?

It is a syndrome caused by plant pollen coming into contact with the mucous membranes of the nose and eyes, and is characterized by a series of symptoms including paroxysmal recurrent sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose, and itchy eyes.

Hay fever is a symptom of seasonal allergic rhinitis and eye irritation caused by plant pollens.

The term is now commonly understood as hay fever, but it used to be called allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis.

My relationship with hay fever

I have had hay fever since I was 9 years old.

I had itchy/painful eyes in early spring. My parents worked together and there was no ophthalmologist near their home, so I took the bus to the hospital alone.

The eyes were cleaned at the hospital, and eye drops were prescribed and put in the eye.

During the rainy season, when the rains started, the symptoms subsided, and in the summer, the symptoms did not appear at all.

The only time I went to the hospital was when I was a child, and since then I have been getting by with eye and nose drops purchased at the pharmacy.

The timing of hay fever symptoms has also changed. When I was younger, it was a short period from the end of spring to the beginning of the rainy season. Now it is longer, from the beginning of spring to the onset of the rainy season.

Perhaps there are more types of pollen to which we react.Since cedar pollen is more prevalent in early spring and pine pollen is more prevalent in late spring, we believe these are the cause.

I was once told that allergic diseases were caused by a weak body. But the person who said that also developed hay fever later. He probably forgot what he said to me.

How to reduce symptoms

In any case, the only thing you can do is to live your life in such a way that you are not exposed to pollen as much as possible.Symptoms lessen when we are indoors. When my children were small and we went to the park in early spring, I was the only one lying down in a simple tent to rest.

I tried several different types of oral medications, but they didn’t work for me.I could not feel the effects of taking them, as they caused pain in my nasal passages and had no effect on my eye symptoms.

Ideally, when I go out, I should wear glasses like goggles with rims and a double mask, but it is difficult (or even dangerous) to wear either in the hot environment of my main job, so at present I have to rely on eye drops and nasal drops as a coping remedy.

I have been using Rohto’s Algard for the past several years.I have tried similar products from other companies, but it seems to suit me best.

Eye drops and nasal drops will be used to get through the three months until the rainy season begins.

When symptoms are severe

Itchy eyes and runny nose are tolerable, but further worsening symptoms include headache and vertigo.

At that point, you have no choice but to lie down and rest. You cannot sleep, but there is no other way but to rest your body.

For me, every year from March to May is a depressing time.

Cherry blossoms are beautiful when they are falling, and taking a walk amidst a blanket of rape blossoms is a pleasant experience. However, for me, it is a painful season due to hay fever symptoms.

I try to reduce my opportunities to go out as much as possible and live patiently until the rainy season.

Today I have no business to go out and spend time inside the house, so my symptoms are weak. This year, too, I have begun to deal with hay fever.I would like to get through this season while suppressing symptoms as much as possible.
